I’m Barbara Vermeersch — a writer and digital creative based in Christchurch, New Zealand. I make picture books and interactive apps for kids.
Writing Picture Books
In 2025, I made the long-planned leap into picture book writing, starting with the Australian Writers’ Centre’s Picture Book course. I quickly fell in love with what these stories can do — how they deliver big feelings, bigger laughs, and the best kind of chaos in under 500 words.
My stories are playful, child-centric, and grounded in real family life and childhood experiences. I build in opportunities for interaction — books that make you shout out, trade messy kisses, or crouch-wiggle-flap around the room. I write with humour, read-aloud energy, and a love for the unexpected.
As a visual thinker with a background in animation and design, I write with the illustrator in mind — picturing not just the scenes, but how they move.
I’m building a body of work and pursuing publication through both traditional and self-publishing avenues. I’m a member of NZSA and regularly develop my manuscripts through beta feedback and professional assessments. It’s amazing to see how much a story can grow on its journey to the reader.
Creative Experience
Since 2002, I’ve worked in the creative digital space — building bilingual story apps for iwi, cultural learning tools for libraries, and games and websites for major brands. I specialise in story-led, interactive projects that engage kids.
I’ve collaborated with illustrators, creative directors, clients, and other stakeholders — each bringing their own perspective to shape the work. I’m comfortable in iterative environments and actively seek feedback that makes the work stronger.
Presenting creative work was a regular part of my role — sometimes with a touch of theatrical flair. I’ve also taught digital technology in adult classrooms, spoken at conferences, and was once mistaken for a professional speaker at a wedding.
